Visit of the Bavarian Business Delegation to Ghana

From the 15th to the 19th of April 2018, the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Ghana organised the visit of a business delegation from Bayern led by Mr. Ulrich Konstantin Rieger from the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Energy and Technology, Germany to Ghana, with a focus on exploring Ghana as a viable destination for doing business.

The business delegation comprised experts and representatives from businesses across diverse sectors and industries including engineering, energy, agriculture, healthcare, environmental technologies, education, infrastructure and aviation, amongst others. The visiting delegation sought to obtain information about possible business and partnership opportunities with the Government of the Republic of Ghana, as well as established and start-up businesses in Ghana.

The visit commenced with a briefing session for the delegates on Monday, 16th April 2018 at the Labadi Beach Hotel where they were informed on key issues pertaining to doing business in Ghana by Mr. Hans-Helge Sander, the Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany to Ghana; Mr. Carsten Ehlers, the Correspondent for West & Central Africa, GTAI; Mr. Martin Mainz, the Regional Director, DEG Regional Office West Africa; Mr. Maximilian Butek, the Delegate, Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Ghana and Mr. Emmanuel Antwi Akoto, a Senior Consultant at Ayisi and Associates.

The Bavarian delegation was thereafter officially received by His Excellency the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia during a courtesy visit to his office at the Jubilee House in Accra on Monday, 16thApril 2018.

The delegation also paid courtesy visits to the Ministry of Trade and Industry, the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Food and Agriculture where they were warmly welcomed by Honourable Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah, the Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry, Honourable Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, the Deputy Minister for Energy and Honourable Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, the Minister of Food & Agriculture respectively, all of the Republic of Ghana.

The second day of the visit featured the Ghanaian-Bavarian Business Forum, held on Tuesday, 17th April 2018, at the Accra City Hotel. The aim was to provide the platform for interaction between the delegates and officials of the public and private sectors in Ghana. The forum was well attended by about ninety (90) participants representing various sectors of the economy.

Presentations were made at the business forum to provide information on Ghana by representatives of the state and the private sector in Ghana including Honourable Barbara Asher Ayisi, Deputy Minister for Education, Honourable Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah, Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry, Mr. James Demitrus, Head of Revenue Monitoring Unit at the Ministry of Energy, Mr. Carl Nelson, Chief Operating Officer  of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), Mrs. Kate Abbeo, Deputy Executive Secretary in charge of Corporate Affairs at the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Mr. Seth Twum-Akwaboah, Chief Executive Officer of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) and Mr. Vincent Annan, Chief Executive Officer of the Sekondi-Takoradi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (STCCI).

Later that evening, the Bavarian delegation met with Business Leaders and Entrepreneurs who are key members of the Ghanaian and German business communities, as well as Officials of the Government of Ghana for the Bavarian Night to network over finger foods and drinks in a cordial atmosphere at the Labadi Beach Hotel.

On Wednesday, 18th April 2018, the Bavarian delegation met with Mr. Alan Walsch (Country Director of GIZ Office, Accra)  and his team to obtain information on projects currently being undertaken by the GIZ. Later that evening, they also met with representatives of over thirty (30) Ghanaian start-up businesses over dinner to explore possible opportunities for collaboration.

The visit concluded on Thursday, 19th April 2018 after visits to Scania West Africa and the Meridian Port Service Limited, both in Tema and a final briefing session with Mr. Maximilian Butek, the Delegate of German Industry and Commerce in Ghana in our office at the World trade Centre, Accra.
